The Project
TWO PEOPLE FROM DIFFERENT WALKS OF LIFE FINDING COMPASSION IN EXTREMITY.
Laura, struggling with her recent separation, gives hell to the young man who breaks into her house, yet their fight leads both to unexpected understanding.
THE DIRECTOR - Carolyn Beaver
The idea for the script began with me trying to reconcile a burglary of my own by turning the experience around and forgiving the intruder. It's been a strange learning experience and writing the script has been a kind of epiphany. It showed me how to let go of the anger and ultimately find peace so I could move on and be better for it. What I hope to show with the film is that you can change your life in a millisecond with a change of perspective.
This film is important to me because, at its foundation, it's about men and women and how we share this planet together. The script looks at human behaviour in the raw, when all the social niceties are stripped away. It examines what happens when two strangers are forced into emotional intimacy. Each is guilty of making easy judgments of the other. Yet, ultimately, they learn that their differences are less important than their similarities. Both find empathy and compassion. They are changed and made better by their contact with each other.
I would love people to come on board because, more than anything, they like the idea but also because they want to help a woman tell a story. In my heart I think thats what this world really needs... more feminine perspective.
THE PRODUCER - Jane Sherning Warren
I initially came on board Carolyn's project as a script developer, then script writer, but watching Carolyn's passion and commitment to the project, and seeing her grow as a director, made me want to help her get it made. As with the other short films I've produced, the project is entirely in keeping with my strong interest in making women's stories and supporting women film practitioners.
THE FUNDS
You might think $8,000.00 is not much to make a movie on. And you'd be right. Making movies is expensive.
However, we are in the very fortunate position of knowing a whole lot of highly skilled and generous film practitioners, many of whom come with their own gear (see below for further details). Thanks to them, much of the equipment we need is coming at no cost, and every one of our incredible cast and crew are working for nothing.
Because there is such a very small pool of highly contested funds for filmmaking available in NZ, more and more, film practitioners rely on the wonderful, enthusiastic support of their wider film family to practice their art. To make this film a reality means asking you to help us feed these marvellous people and cover their expenses during the shoot. It will also help pay for props, makeup, wardrobe and any equipment that isn't being kindly donated. It will cover gifts to people who lend us locations. It will mean we can buy insurance. It will pay for colour grading, editing, and a sound mix. Without you, it won't happen. With you, we can make something truly moving.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support.
We sincerely, and literally, couldn't do it without you.
HERE ARE SOME NICE THINGS SOME PEOPLE YOU MAY KNOW HAVE WRITTEN ABOUT THE SCRIPT:
"A beautifully crafted script, that skilfully observes a moment when two very different individuals from very different sides of the tracks are confronted with each other. Part thriller, part social commentary, this is a rich short script, with a great strong female central role."
Cameron Rhodes (Actor)
"I really enjoyed the script. An intimate and touching little tale. I like the comparison of two worlds early on, and also the chance for a little bit of comedy to not have things feel too heavy."
Aaron Morton (Cinematographer)
"A script which is intriguing, and leading you beyond the expected."
Dianne Moffatt (Script Supervisor)
"Carolyn has been around the film business for a long time, working on crews and creating her own work... I've always enjoyed her sense of humour and energetic creativity, and have relished reading her scripts over the years.....! "Breaking and Entering" brings Carolyn's unique perspective to social realism as she successfully explores the universal magic of human connection."
