Bass in Birmingham 2015

I'm Maddy, a classical double bassist currently based in Auckland, New Zealand. Beginning this September, I will commence a Master of Music in Instrumental Performance at Birmingham Conservatoire, United Kingdom under Thomas Martin.

It has been an incredible few years since moving to Auckland with my family in 2008. Never in my dreams would I imagine becoming a classical musician. I am very excited to be on my way to Birmingham. There is so much going on there with concerts held at the Conservatoire and the famous Birmingham Symphony Hall. The two year degree will involve lessons, solo playing, orchestral playing, chamber music and of course, a lot of practice.

I have been fortunate enough to be awarded a near full fee scholarship for the duration of my studies. You can help me get to the UK through making donations towards relocation costs, rent for the first few months, bringing my bass over and flights. Donations will also help me with the last remaining funds needed to purchase a fantastic instrument made and restored by Evgeny Lanchtchikov, who also happens to be my teacher for the last 7 years!

Evgeny has been guiding me through ups and downs, also a fantastic performer, mentor and luthier. He and his wife, Tatiana, have been the extra set of parents I somehow acquired. Thank you for everything - your wisdom, patience, generosity, expertise. I can't express enough gratitude.

Going to Europe to study has been a dream in the making. Having only started bass at 15 I had a lot of catching up to do. Not long ago, I played in an APO concert for the first time - with both Evgeny and Tatiana there. It was such a strange feeling to be sharing the stage as equals.
