Auckland Choral - Singing to Inspire
Auckland Choral Society | Music
Overview
Help Auckland Choral present J. S. Bach’s remarkable St Matthew Passion, a work of epic proportions featuring a double chorus and orchestra, students of the Cantare Westlake Girls Choir, and many of Aotearoa New Zealand’s finest vocal soloists.
Bach’s St Matthew Passion is widely recognised as one of the greatest masterpieces in Western sacred music. The first half tells the compelling story of Jesus’s betrayal, the second of his crucifixion and burial. This inspired mix of moving drama and theological discourse prompted Leonard Bernstein to declare “there is nothing like it in all of music.”
Auckland Choral has been performing timeless classical works as well as exciting contemporary works, including those by Aotearoa New Zealand composers, since 1855 and is proud to play a significant role in the local arts scene.
The concert showcases many fine soloists, including tenor Iain Tetley as the Evangelist, baritone James Ioelu as Jesus, and soprano Anna Leese. It also provides an opportunity for the Cantare Choir of Westlake Girls School to perform a substantial classical work alongside an experienced adult choir and a professional orchestra inside the amazing acoustics of Auckland’s Town Hall.
Our Boosted fundraiser will contribute to the costs of hiring the Town Hall and the multitude of outstanding soloists. We are deeply committed to bringing the benefits of choral music to an increasingly diverse audience and are thrilled to be sharing this musical masterpiece with you.
Please support our Boosted campaign and help us bring this incredible work to life.
