'Au Ta - The enduring legacy of Tatau
Tagata Moana Trust | Visual Art
The Project
We are beyond excited to share that Fibre Gallery—the South Island’s sole Pacific art gallery—will be hosting a groundbreaking exhibition next June: ‘Au Ta – The Enduring Legacy of Polynesian Tatau.
This extraordinary event will immerse Christchurch in the ancient and sacred art of Tatau, a practice steeped in centuries of tradition and culture. Featuring live demonstrations, workshops by esteemed tufuga (masters), and enlightening panel discussions, ‘Au Ta will be a unique opportunity to experience and connect with this profound art form.
This exhibition will be a historic moment for Christchurch, representing the largest gathering of Pasifika Tatau practitioners in two decades. We are committed to making this experience accessible to everyone, including residents and school groups, free of charge. However, to turn this vision into reality, we need your support.
Here’s how you can make a difference:
Every dollar you contribute will be doubled by our generous partners, the Rata Foundation and Creative New Zealand. Your donation will directly support:
- Artist Fees & Stipends: Ensuring fair compensation for the talented practitioners.
- Transport & Accommodation: Facilitating travel and stay for artists coming from afar.
- Exhibition Production: Bringing this intricate and vibrant art form to life for all to experience.
About Tagata Moana Trust:
Tagata Moana Trust is dedicated to advancing Pacific Peoples through the arts and beyond. Our mission is to enhance the representation of Pacific Peoples in STEAM fields and amplify their rich arts, language, and culture. In 2022, we proudly opened the Fibre Art Gallery, the first Pacific art gallery in Te Waipounamu, providing a vital platform for Pacific artists and fostering a deeper appreciation of their stories and creative expressions.
Your contribution will help us honor and sustain this treasured tradition, making a lasting impact on our community and beyond.
Donate today to help bring ‘Au Ta to life. Together, we can celebrate and preserve the rich cultural heritage of Polynesian Tatau for future generations.
