Written by Tom Minter, AMERICA REX is a call for a return to indigenous ways of knowing and belonging, in a world crisscrossed by tensions of power, politics and personalities.
This production, located in context of the ever-changing and growing cosmos, boasts a diverse twelve-strong New Zealand cast and an ingenious team of creatives including artists of M?ori, Samoan, Greek, Zimbabwean, Jamaican, African-American, Lebanese, Colombian, Singaporean, Chinese, Sri Lankan, Indian, British and American descent.
The purpose of this development season is to create and stimulate conversation, showcase NZ talent and highlight our cross-cultural collaboration with America. It will enable us to document and create marketing collateral for future seasons and tours, and generate interest from potential producers and buyers of this work. Your support and contribution will help lift America Rex off the page to the stage.
This development showing will offer a glimpse into the production, bringing together a range of different creatives and huge cast. The showing will reflect the influence of dance, AV design, technology, lighting, design and sound.
After close to two years of trans-Atlantic conversations and a staged reading at the end of 2017, AMERICA REX deserves the very best to ensure that this work is supported. As we arrive at the development process, we require $10,000 to get this work on its feet for our presentation in August.
Your support ensures we can get the full performance and creative team together in Auckland, and then pack us into TAPAC, The Performance Arts Centre. Your generous donations will ensure that we have the capability to share this story with the world, and showcase the diversity of New Zealand's creatives - something that is vitally needed and sorely wanted.
Committed to telling our stories together, the kaupapa (purpose) of JK Productions He Korero Ng? Tahi is to make sure that diverse creatives in Aotearoa are supported to create works that traverse and transgress traditional boundaries.
Drawing upon the combined creativity of visual artist Jimmy James Kouratoras and writer/director, Dione Joseph, JK Productions brings a diverse New Zealand cast to African-American playwright, Tom Minter's, contemporary epic drama.
This is a story that shines a light on the talent, brilliance and beauty of Aotearoa's diverse creatives.
