MEET THE TEAM
Hello music lovers and supporters! We are almost half way through our campaign and thought we would introduce ourselves:
Karin Reid - Artistic Director
Karin is a vocalist, lyricist/composer and events organiser; her participation in the performing arts spans over 20 years and she has also been involved in jazz in Dunedin, Wellington and the UK. Her compelling voice and repertoire gravitates towards the darker side of the jazz tradition, with her rich tones often evoking cabaret and earning her the label of ‘jazz noir’. Recent work with her duo with guitarist Alex Wolken (Reid+Wolken) has seen her exploring adventurous and challenging material including vocalesed tunes by Charles Mingus and other modern instrumental jazz masters, and developing original material in collaboration with Wolken. As an independent events producer and organiser she now focuses as the artistic director, chair and driving force behind the Dunedin Jazz, Cabaret and Performing Arts Trust and it’s online promotional arm JAZZ Dunedin: Events and Experiences. The Albany Street Jazz Loft initiative is one of a few upcoming activities the Trust plans to bring to life.
Alex Wolken - Project Assistant
Alex is a Dunedin-based guitarist, composer, songwriter and fortnightly host of Jazz Junction on Radio One 91FM Dunedin. His current work as a guitarist and songwriter/composer includes the ‘indie jazz-noir’ duo Reid+Wolken with Karin, and the ‘alt-jazz-rock’ band Celluloid Bikers, and he is also active in a group of improvisers at the forefront of free improvisation in Dunedin. As a composer he has also written notated works for contemporary art music performers, including 175East and Dylan Lardelli. He coordinated the Jazz in the Pocket jazz nights from 2019-2020, and is now project assistant for the Albany Street Jazz Loft initiative as well as trustee of the Dunedin Jazz, Cabaret and Performing Arts Charitable Trust (JAZZ Dunedin: Events and Experiences)
