'AKAU TAU - The War Club

‘Akau Tau, The War Club is not just an ancient weapon but an hierloom of families, geneaologies of community that formed relations or built new lives. After each warfare, victory, loss, event, a decorative or symbolic carving would be gouged onto the war club to tell their stories.

It is my hope to create a 2.8metre ‘Apa’apai ‘akau tau to draw attention for talanoa and begin sharing and passing down knowledge and stories. This will be the largest ʻAPAʻAPAI ʻakau tau to be ever made. It will be measured 2.8metres long. It will be enriched/decorated with both ancient and modern patterns, motifs, embellishments of bones, shells and stones to tell our stories from all over Pasifika and the vast Moana nations. 

ABOUT US

Hi there - my name is Langi'o'uiha 'I. L. Tangulu. I am a Tongan artist co-running with my business partner, Caroline Scott Fanamanu, a little carving business named Vava'u Carving House. It has been running for about 3 yrs now but I have been carving since 1994 starting from when my father taught me as a young boy back in the island of Tonga. I have always enjoyed carving as an art and passion but also, as a means of preserving and passing down our Pasifika geneologies and stories.
