Overview

A self-deprecating 40-year-old is on a mission to find out why she still hates getting her bloody period.

Join Rachel's journey by supporting our film.

About the Project

40 times around the sun. 480 lunar cycles. 324 bloody periods. On a mission to ditch a lifetime of period cringe, Rachel turns the camera on herself and gets up-close and personal with her monthly visitor. Challenging her own attitude and society’s stigma surrounding periods, will she find something in the mess to celebrate? A fist-pumping bear hug for the everyday activist in us all.

About Bloody Time! combines intimate first-person moments of reflection with candid interviews with close friends and family, and bears witness to five days of period hell as Rachel attempts to shed the loathing, oppression and pain she associates with her period - along with this month’s uterine lining.

At odds with herself, her body and - at times - the world around her, Rachel navigates a minefield of opinions, reactions, personalities and quiet truths in an attempt to accept this natural and unavoidable part of life, so she can try to make periods positive.

Revealing how we all have our own part to play in ditching the stigma around periods, About Bloody Time! is a simple tale about being a good parent, a great friend, and learning to be kind to ourselves.

We Need Your Help!

We have been selected as part of Loading Docs 2020 short documentary series, Revolution.

As part of the initiative, we need to raise a minimum of $2,500. You can help by donating here and sharing this link with your friends.

Your contribution will help us secure an incredible team of filmmakers and to license New Zealand music. Every little bit counts - from donations of $5 (the price of a box of tampons) to $50 (the price of a moon cup), to much, much more! No amount is too big or too small!

This is an all or nothing campaign. Once we reach our target, it will unlock funding from Loading Docs. If we don’t reach our target, we won’t be able to make this documentary.

Simply donate and share with your networks.

What’s Loading Docs?

Loading Docs is an award-winning short documentary initiative to develop New Zealand filmmaking talent. Loading Docs is funded by NZ On Air with support from the New Zealand Film Commission and Te Māngai Pāho.

About the Filmmakers

Director Rachel Judkins and Producer Linda Hughes are a couple of menstruators from way back, and come to this project with years of experience in film and television between them.

Rachel has been documenting the lives of everyday people and public figures alike in Auckland and Toronto for over ten years as a freelance film and television researcher. Her recent work on various social impact documentaries has fuelled her desire to tell stories that have the potential for effecting positive change. After years of helping bring other filmmakers’ visions to life, Rachel is now thrilled to be developing her own documentaries. About Bloody Time! is her directorial debut.

Linda is a film producer and public art project manager based in Auckland, New Zealand. Linda spent 15 years in production management at award-winning production houses, studios and channels in the United Kingdom and New Zealand; including Weta Workshop, Weta Digital and Discovery Channel. Linda’s accolades include Best Children’s Short at the Italian Film Festival 2002 (producer) and international festival selection for feature documentary Me, You, Mankosi (director). Her current work as a project manager brings digital art installations to Auckland’s public spaces.

Huge thanks for your support!
