Margaret Feeney
I am an artist and work from my studio in Waikato, Aotearoa. I work to think about ideas. My practice looks at the hijacking of the natural world and the human built world by the modern market system. I use an expanded methodology of drawing, studio mahi in different media, symposia talks, writing, the occasional residency, and Collective Invention workshops.
I focus on three main projects: Water Systems, It Started With A Kiss and A Black Comedy in Pastels.
o I am currently making a sculpture Bird and Insect Bath for Sculpture On The Gulf 2022 on Waiheke Island as part of Water Systems, which looks at getting water to animals in times of drought.
o It Started With a Kiss looks at information space and the expanding influence of form over content in the human built world. It Started With a Kiss is an ongoing project and has been supported by Creative New Zealand, the Blumhardt Foundation and The Arts Foundation Boosted community.
o A Black Comedy in Pastels plays with the human shift of mind and environment from Culture/ Nature to Culture/ Culture, it jumps around between the other two projects.
I also work at Māpura Studios in Auckland; Māpura is an outsider art studio for artists living with diversity, adversity and disability. I have tutored at universities, polytechnics, prisons and private and community art schools across Aotearoa. I have a Bachelor of Arts, Art History Major, from Victoria University, Wellington and a Master of Fine Art, RMIT, Melbourne.
I have been in over 40 group shows and have had 18 solo shows, including
o It Started With A Kiss: a low resolution show about high technology, Waiheke Community Art Gallery- Te Whare Taonga o Waiheke, Waiheke Island, 2018
o The Showroom: a black comedy in pastels, an installation at Te Uru, Waitākere Contemporary Gallery, Auckland, 2014
o Storage Systems, an installation at the Blue Oyster Project Space, Dunedin, 2011

Boosted How To Guides
Mapping your crowd
Crowdfunding is not about you. It’s about the community around what you do. Your crowd.
And there’s a difference between your audience and your crowd. Your crowd are the people personally, financially, and emotionally invested in you successfully completing your art project. They’re with you for the journey. They’re with you for your career.31 Aug 2024 -

Asking through email
Social media is a handy marketing tool, but you don’t own your social media community. The visibility of your posts is at the mercy of social media algorithms. In other words, just because you publish a status update, doesn’t mean people see it. Furthermore, if the gods of digital decide to fold a platform, that’s your hard-earned followers gone in a blink.

Running events
Events can raise awareness of your campaign, raise money, reward your core crowd and create opportunities for media coverage.
But they can be time-consuming to organise, so if you can piggyback on existing events where you can make an ask, or have a supporter ask for you, even better.
