Is Boosted right for you?

Welcome to Boosted!

Unsure what we're about? Well, we're glad you're here to find out.

Boosted is an all-or-nothing crowdfunding platform dedicated to the arts in Aotearoa. Run by the Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi, Boosted's aim is to give creatives the confidence to build successful giving communities. You’d come to us if your art needs money or you’re passionate about giving to the arts. Artists and donors: a love story.
Our favourite love story, in fact.

What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is the art of rallying your community to fund your project. To read more about the nitty gritty details of crowdfunding, check out this article here.

Why Boosted?

Boosted’s secret sauce for success is our expert crew. When you crowdfund with us, you get one-on-one coaching and support from a team of crowdfunding aces. We're here for you throughout the process.

Since 2013, we’ve helped over 2,00 artistic mates raise a cool combined $14 million for their creative projects. Over 120,000 donations have been processed through the Boosted platform. Our 84% success rate isn’t bad either (holler if you find a better one, ‘cos we’ve been looking).

Boosted mentorship

Our mentors advise from a place of personal experience and further training. They're engaged in the arts, are artists themselves and are creative marketing and fundraising pros, who specialise in promoting the arts and crafting your story for your crowd.

  • Mentors start your campaign planning process with you, first by providing the resources you need to start planning.
  • Your mentor will arrange for an initial project consultation phone call after you have familiarised yourself with the resources - it’s best to come to this pre-armed with a good idea of what you’re planning for content and timeline. We will also brainstorm with you and help you find the direction you should be taking while planning.
  • Mentoring after that initial consultation is a series of smaller calls, emails, updates and check-ins. We will work alongside you as you plan, launch, for the duration of the campaign, and after you have completed your campaign.
  • The total mentoring time varies from project to project. This is dependant on the size of the project, previous experience of the project owner and just how the campaign goes while it’s live. We don’t have a limit to the support we give, we flex to suit each project. Just remember we deal with a lot of projects - so a little planning and forewarning for meetings or calls works best for us!

What projects can run on Boosted?

Any arts project can be listed on Boosted, as long as it benefits New Zealand and enriches the cultural life of New Zealanders in some way. Boosted can also be used to raise funds for arts-based research, education and infrastructure. You don't have to be an artist to rally for funds on Boosted, however, you have to have a specific arts-related project in mind that you’d like to get off the ground when you crowdfund with us.

Your project target can be anything from $500 upwards. It also must fit into one of our project genres.

These genres are:

  • Craft and Object
  • Dance
  • Fashion and Textiles
  • Film
  • Inter-arts
  • Literature
  • Multi Discipline
  • Music
  • Theatre
  • Visual Arts

It's all or nothing

If you don’t hit 100% of your target by your determined closing date, all funds received are returned to your donors, and there are no fees for you or the kind people who donated to your campaign. We do it this way because the all-or-nothing model raises the stakes and raises your success rate. Simple.

That 10% admin fee

If you’re successful, 90% of the money you raise goes to you.
The 10% admin fee goes back into Boosted directly. We are a not-for-profit organisation, who runs on humble operating costs, and minimal overheads. The 10% fee ultimately pays for:

  • Your mentor, for their time, expertise, watchful eye and guidance pre-, mid- and post-campaign.
  • The bank fees associated with the myriad transactions which take place for your campaign.
  • Administrative time, there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes to get the money where it needs to go - right from setting up match donors to paying your grant at the end of the campaign. Since we are a charity - our payments need to go through a 2-signature approval process and that takes time and money.
  • The customer service involved in helping your donors if they are having any issues donating to your project.
  • Website costs for a site like Boosted are pretty steep - so the fee also goes toward hosting fees, maintenance, troubleshooting and ongoing product development - to make sure Boosted is putting your campaign out there in the best way possible.
• The fees also contribute to the improvement of the platform. New functionality with the website includes; direct bank payments, inviting match donors to projects, improved news feed, new sharing options, and a better image and video gallery.

If you’re GST registered, you can add GST on top of your grant amount. This GST payment is unique to Boosted. If you’re GST registered and considering using another crowdfunding website, check the GST implications first.

And remember, the money Boosted pays you is considered income in most instances, so talk to your accountant about your tax obligations.
