New Generation
The New Generation Awards, established by The Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi in 2006, celebrated artists at an early stage of their careers who had demonstrated immense promise and potential. Recognising the need to support emerging talent, this award provided both financial assistance and national recognition, ensuring these artists had the opportunity to further develop their careers.
Every two years, five artists across all disciplines were selected, each receiving $25,000, and a specially commissioned glasswork by Christine Cathie, symbolizing the honour and recognition given to each recipient. Before accepting the award, recipients outline how they plan to use the funds to advance their careers, whether through creating new work, investing in equipment, pursuing education, or simply dedicating time to their craft.
In 2018, the New Generation Award evolved into the Springboard Award, continuing its legacy of nurturing future arts champions.
