Her powerful voice, both on the page and on the stage, has earned her international acclaim and recognition, including the prestigious roles of Commonwealth Poet and New Zealand Poet Laureate. Through her poetry and performances, Selina explores themes of identity, culture, and social justice, captivating audiences with her evocative wordcraft and dynamic presence.
As a writer, Selina's contributions to Pacific literature are significant. Her poetry collections and scholarly works have been instrumental in amplifying the voices of first wave Pacific women poets and bringing marginalised indigenous literary voices to the forefront. Her dedication to her craft and her commitment to empowering others through the written word have earned her the title of Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) and a Fellowship in the Royal Society of New Zealand (FRSNZ).
In addition to her literary achievements, Selina is a passionate educator and mentor. As a Professor in the English Department at the University of Auckland, she inspires students through her courses on Māori and Pacific Literature and Creative Writing. Her role as Co-Director of the Centre for Arts and Social Transformation allows her to advocate for the integration of creative writing in school curricula across Aotearoa and beyond, ensuring that the power of storytelling and creative expression remains a vital part of education.
Selina 's influence extends beyond the classroom through her innovative equity work through the Growing Niu Leaders programme, which equips Pasifika leaders throughout Aotearoa with the transformative tools of storytelling and poetry.
