Maisie Chilton

Discipline:
Visual Artist, Poet
Awards:
Springboard Award 2021
Highlight:
My work, and the act of making it is an integral part of how I engage in the world, how I process my life. Art is the internalisation of the external and externalisation of the internal. It’s the language of my subconscious and without it I’m without a voice. This is what makes receiving this award so profoundly moving to me, it’s like someone really looking into you and saying “ I see you, I hear you,” and I think that kind of recognition is all anyone actually wants.

Maisie Chilton is a Waihōpai born, Pōneke based artist, poet and teacher. As a self-taught creative, she uses mahi toi as a means to address, process and heal the physical and mental tension caused by disability and repressed trauma. S

Maisie’s work speaks about other-ness – holding space for a range of experiences by exploring tensions in her own personal history. In her upcoming exhibition, Where Does It Hurt?, she uses art as therapy to unpack repressed trauma caused by sexual assault – a creative response that will undoubtably resonate with many across Aotearoa.

Maisie Chilton will be mentored by 2014 New Generation Recipient Star Gossage

Star Gossage is a painter of Ngati Manuhiri/Wai, Ngati Ruanui, French, English and Portuguese descent. Alongside painting, her practice includes theatre, film-making, poetry and sculpture.

Statement from selection panel: "Maisie is using poetry and painting to process trauma and disability and other-ness. It feels incredibly important to have someone who is using things for herself, but also for her community. Maisie has huge potential with her work, and the service she provides to her community is extremely important."
