Carin Wilson Kahui Whetu Ngā Aho (Mātaatua, Ngāti Awa, Tūhourangi) is an influential designer and sculptor whose career has been dedicated to advancing Māori design principles and promoting culturally relevant practices in architecture and furniture making. Carin's work encompasses a wide range of mediums, from handcrafted furniture to large-scale public art installations, often inspired by his deep connection to Māori narratives and the natural environment.

Born in Ōtautahi Christchurch, Carin began studying law at Victoria University but soon left for Europe to immerse himself in art and architecture. Upon returning to Aotearoa, he made a significant impact with his first major exhibition at the Canterbury Building Centre, with McKenzie & Willis purchasing his entire collection.

Through furniture making, education, architecture and advocacy, the impact of Carin’s mahi has been both visible and behind the scenes. Across the motu, he has worked on high profile design commissions in the public sphere, continued to contribute in academic contexts to develop education thinking and has had extensive fabrication and exhibiting practices. Carin is a mentor for rising Māori creatives, giving his time and expertise generously. He continues to advocate for mana whenua and community collaboration in projects, championing a deep understanding of the spaces and places in which his work sits. His legacy is fit for a Laureate.”
