Hamish graduated with a Bachelor of Law and a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Otago before working as a solicitor at Russell McVeagh in Wellington. Hamish then moved into the finance industry working at First NZ Capital in the Investment Banking team before heading to London for eight years to work as a portfolio manager in two separate hedge funds. In 2015 Hamish moved back to Auckland with his wife Victoria and their two young daughters where he manages the Sinclair Investment Group family office, which alongside various private investments, supports a number of charitable organisations in New Zealand (in particular, the arts, sports, education and health). Hamish also sits on the Northern Club Committee in Auckland.
